Brake stepper motor

A brake stepper motor is used for various applications where instantaneous stopping of the driven load is required. The operation of the brake is that the brake gets engaged when the electrical power to the motor is shut down or the power fails.

How do brake stepper motors work?

The stepper motor will not lock itself when it is powered on. But after installing a holding brake device at the tail of the stepper motor,  it will realize the power off self-locking .When the motor is powered on, the brake device is separated from the output shaft of the stepper motor, and the motor runs normally. When the power is off, the brake is released and tightly holds the motor shaft.

Application

The brake stepper motor is mainly suitable for the transmission mechanism of vertical and horizontal movement. Such as bonding machines, packaging machinery, semiconductor equipment, textile machinery, CNC machine tools, biological analysis and testing instruments, laser focusing equipment, optical testing equipment, taper puller, automobile testing and other equipment. It is fixed and maintained in place after power failure, and the normal operation of the motor will not be affected when powered on. It is the preferred braking unit for z-axis motion system. Now it is widely used in multi axis linkage manipulator, automation equipment, fixture and metallurgical tools.

Classification

The brake of stepping motor generally includes spring brake and permanent magnet brake.

The permanent magnet brake has faster response speed (it can be locked within 50ms), low noise and less heating. It can be powered on brake or power off brake, but power off brake is commonly used.

Spring set brake technology is simple, low-maintenance, and forgiving. Parts need little if any additional burnishing once implemented, and they can operate reliably amid fluctuating voltages — 5V DC is enough to release the armature’s hold on the rotor, and as little as 3V DC will keep it released. It is also possible to equip a spring set brake with a manual override, which has maintenance and safety advantages.
